What to Wear Under the Dress: A Guide to Communion Undergarments
Life Update: London Rain & Latte Art
Happy Tuesday, guys! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week so far. Honestly, the weather here in London has been absolutely crazy lately – one minute it’s sunny, and the next it’s pouring rain! Typical British weather, right? :-) I spent the morning running around Notting Hill trying to find the perfect oat milk latte (priorities, haha!) and dodging puddles with the stroller. Mom life is no joke, but at least the coffee was 10/10.
Anyway, today I wanted to sit down and chat about something that has been popping up in my DMs constantly lately. It’s Communion season! Can you believe it? It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Christmas, and now spring is fully here. I know so many of you are in full planning mode for your little one’s big day. We talk so much about the dress itself, but today, let’s have some real talk about what goes underneath. Because let’s be honest, if she’s not comfortable, nobody is happy!
So, grab your tea (or wine, I won’t judge!), and let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of Communion undergarments.
Comfort is Key (Seriously!)
Okay, first things first. We all want our girls to look like little angels, but if they are scratching, pulling, or complaining about their underwear, the day is going to be a struggle. Trust me on this! When you are browsing through gorgeous Communion dresses, it’s easy to forget about the practical stuff. But the layer closest to her skin is actually the most important one.
Think about it: she’s going to be wearing this outfit for hours. There’s the ceremony, the photos (so many photos!), the family meal, and probably running around with cousins later. You need undergarments that are soft, breathable, and stay in place. Cotton is always a safe bet, or a high-quality blend that feels smooth against the skin. No itchy lace directly on the skin, please!
The Slip: To Wear or Not to Wear?
This is the number one question I get! Do you need a slip or a petticoat? The answer usually depends on the style of the dress.
If you have chosen one of those voluminous, princess-style Communion dresses with lots of tulle and layers, you might not need extra volume. However, a simple cotton slip can be a lifesaver to prevent the tulle from scratching her legs. There is nothing worse than an itchy skirt ruining the mood!
On the other hand, if you’ve gone for a simpler, A-line satin dress, a petticoat with a bit of structure can give it that beautiful, full shape that looks so chic in photos. It just elevates the whole look and makes the dress sit perfectly.
Have you decided on the silhouette of the dress yet? Let me know in the comments!
Seamless is Your Best Friend
Let’s talk about VPL (Visible Panty Lines). Yes, even for kids, this matters when wearing white! Many Communion dresses are made of delicate fabrics like satin or fine silk. If the underwear has thick seams or bright patterns (no Hello Kitty prints today, sorry!), it might show through.
I always recommend going for seamless underwear in white or nude. Nude is actually often better under white fabric because it blends with the skin tone and doesn't create that stark white-on-white contrast. It’s a little stylist trick that works for adults and kids alike! :-)
Also, consider the cut. If the dress has a low back or sleeveless arms, make sure the vest or camisole underneath doesn't peek out. We want the focus to be on the beautiful dress and her happy smile, not a stray strap!
Tights vs. Socks: The Great Debate
Oh, the British weather dilemma! In May or June, it should be warm, but we all know it could easily be 12 degrees and windy.
- Tights: If it’s chilly, opaque white tights are a classic choice. They look elegant and keep her warm. Just make sure they fit well so she’s not constantly pulling them up!
- Socks: For a more vintage or summery look, white ankle socks with a little lace trim are absolutely adorable. They look so sweet with traditional Communion dresses and Mary Jane shoes.
Personally, I love the sock look if the weather permits – it’s just so fresh and youthful! But always have a pair of tights in your bag just in case. Better safe than sorry!
Thermal Layers? Maybe!
I know, I know, it sounds extreme. But remember that church buildings can be freezing, even in summer! A thin, white thermal vest worn underneath the bodice can be a total game-changer. Look for one with a deep scoop neck so it remains invisible. She will thank you when she’s standing still during the ceremony and not shivering!
Shoes Matter Too (Okay, not undergarments, but still!)
While we are talking about what goes under the dress, let’s briefly touch on shoes. Please, please break them in before the big day! Let her wear them around the house with thick socks for a few hours. Blisters are the enemy of a good time. And maybe pack a pair of clean white trainers for the reception? It’s a cool girl move and saves her feet for dancing! <3

Final Tips for the Big Day
- Dress Rehearsal: Have her try on the entire outfit – underwear, socks, dress, shoes, hair accessories – a week before. This way, you can spot any itchy tags or visible straps before the morning of.
- Emergency Kit: Pack safety pins, stain remover wipes (for those inevitable chocolate stains!), and a spare pair of tights.
- Let Her Be a Kid: Once the formal photos are done, let her run, play, and eat the cake. The dress might get a little dirty, but the memories will be perfect. That’s what matters most! !!!
I hope this guide helps you navigate the tricky world of what to wear underneath. It’s all about making sure she feels confident and comfortable so she can shine bright on her special day.
